Reflection-Thing 23

  • I think that social media is going to be a large part of the libraries of the very near future. As evidenced by the number of libraries already participating
  • I liked some of the opportunities to reach out to specific goups, like book clubs and I liked the weekly library program on YouTube
  • Yes, I have
  • I have never played around with social media, but once I created a alias for myself I had a lot of fun with it. Janet Brown liked to do the networking a lot more than I do so maybe I have learned something from "her."

User Choice - Thing 22

My Choice:

Who: My Heritage
What: One of the web's leading family networks
Where: http://www.myheritage.com/
When: May 18, 2010
Why: Because I am alway interested in genealogy web sites and this allows you to create your own private family site where you and your family join together to build your family tree, share photos, preserve the family history forever, and keep up with family news, birthdays and events.
How: It was first place in Genealogy on SEOmoz.org

This was the most fun I have had with 23 things. I have started my family tree and am going to share it with my sisters.

Wiki - Thing 21

Wikipedia is largest example of a wiki website, but there are tons of them on the internet. Wikis are sort of like an encyclopedia that people go to find information, but there are many more uses. Wikis can help you organize and coordinate information. Each member participating in the Wiki can contribute information, but the neat thing is that each member can make additions and corrections to the team information allowing it to grow and develop into a good solid plan relecting contributions from all members of the team.

It is so simple to work: Selecting Edit turns the page into a document that can be change; selecting Save turns the document back into a page. Link allow you to create a new page.

I created Josephine's Wine Bar and Bistro and then edited it to add a comment. Wikis are a great way to collaborate with small or large groups. I wonder how a book club or maybe even a committee would benefit from its use.

Podcasting - Thing 20

Podcasts are audio files and are distributed by some form of web fee. Podcasts are distributed as MP3 files and you can listen to them on many types of audio devices: computers, MP3 players, ipod and many others. Programs that can receive podcasts are called podcatchers.

I listen to an author, Anne Lamott, hosted by the DeKalb County Public Library. It was very interesting and funny. The podcast was recorded at a program in which she talked about her newest book, Imperfect Birds. It lasted about 16 minutes. Visits with other authors were also offered on this site. What a great way to do book talks. A bank of book talks by popular authors would be fun, but I think for that to be effective you would need to have them be much shorter.

I listened on my computer which offered computerized voice patterns is a wild variety of colors; I think downloading them is the way to go. I also looked in on Consumer Attitudes on Podcast Advertising to see what was happening there. This podcast had the audio tied to a PowerPoint presentation. I do wonder what the future of podcasting is because of the hugh share of the market that video is claiming. I can see where the library can investing in some of this form of reaching out to the patron, but I don't think it is as effective as video forms.

Google.Docs - Thing 16

Google Docs can be opened, used and shared ~ anywhere and with anyone. I created a new document in Google.Docs and was surprised about how much like Word it is. I changed the fonts and played around with the buttons and it response very much like Word. I check the View button to check on tool bars and it said the "Show spelling suggestions" was checked. When a word was mis-spelled a red wavy line would appear under but no Spell Check buttonseem to be available. I check the Help tab and selected Google Docs Help Center. When I asked about Spell Check, it told me a "ABC with a check mark" button should appear on the right hand side of the page. It was not there.

I upload a document from my files. It was very easy and quick. When I open it, it appeared exactly as it had when I created it in Word.

Getting to Know Google Docs was also helpful. It offered Keyboard Shortcut that were interested. You could really learn to get around on this site well. The really advantage is being able to access these file whenever you log on to a computer.

Hulu - Thing 19

Hulu is an online video site that was a take-off on the YouTube phenomenon. It'a primarly goal is to attact TV and movie lovers to its site. It uses advertisements to pay its way.

Miss your favorite espisode of a TV series? Check Hulu to see if it is there. Its draw is that you can select and play it on demand. You never have to miss out on what is happening on your favorite show. Another neat feature allows you to have some interaction by posting comments and get feedback from others interested in the same series or movie you are.

Hulu is starting to have some competition; the revenue generated by the ads is a strong incentive to create new video sites based on this idea.

Each episode is preceeded by the announcement that there will be limited commercial interuptions. While a commercial is airing there is a countdown clock show how much time the commercial will play. I watched a "Making a Scene" episode from 24. It began with a short commercial, showed a little teaser to what was going to be presented on the show, had a commercial and the then aired the show. It lasted 8:02 minutes. Nice way to present the segment. Searches are easy with lots of choices to see on the opening page as well as being able to do searches. I finally got to see the Betty White Super Bowl commercial.

Interesting.

YouTube - Thing 18

It is amazing to know that YouTube did not exist until about 5 years ago and today it is considered to be the best site for uploading and sharing all types of video. This phenomena was reported in the New York Times when it did a story on a 9-year old boy who used YouTube as a search engine to do his research projects; it make you wonder if this will be the way an academic version of YouTube will be used in schools. YouTube EDU has surely open the door for this particular type of use.

YouTube can be played directly from a web browser and so it accessible from any computer. Since the size of a video must be less than 10 minutes you can watch "shorts" on any topic for as much time as you want to put into it. One of the most interesting use of video was What's Happening" by the Allen County, IN Public Library. A daily "short" was given to let the public know what was on the agenda for different branches of the library on a particular date: programs, event and special announcements ~ very cool.

Some of the videos were done in an entertaining format to highlight the duties and responsibilities of librarians and some were done poking fun at the attitudes of some librarians. All of them were pure entertainment. You can search for any topic under the sun and find something on YouTube about it.

One of the primarly use of this site is to share videos with others. Whether it is friends, family, co-workers or countless others, everyone can "tune-in" to view what any individual chooses to show. Tonight I was able to see a 1973 eight mm film taken of my family in Yellowstone National Park - Charlie had hair; can you believe it! I had forgotten that the video was even taken ~ what a surprise. Thanks, YouTube!

Somethings I would love to view on YouTube: I would love to see FPL have a "short" for the Lone Star Festival this year. We could do a composite of the Adult Service programs for 2011 and link it to our web site. "Shorts" on computer classes, how-to "shorts," and "shorts" on any thing that we would like to highlight at the library.

Music Streaming and Sharing -Thing 17

I selected Pandora for learning about music streaming. It is easy to use and you have instant gratification when you create your "special station." You can select your favorite artists and Pandora gives you some of their songs to choose from (thumbs up) and it also gives you some suggestions of other artists who sings in the same styles as your selected artists. You have the capability to bookmark songs and artists so you can come back to them.

There are some rules on Pandora that places limits on you as to how many songs you can skip, so you need to make careful selection of your favorite artists. If this is a problem to you, you can select other music streaming sites which give you the ablility to play specific songs such as Last.fm.

You can create special stations for your different moods - slow and easy to fast and loud. If you create a profile, you can save your stations, but if you choose not to do this you can make quick selections each time you log in. The ads are a little off putting, but worth it. Nice!

Google Maps - Thing 15

Google Maps were a surprise to me. I have done quick search and even printed maps from here, but I have never explored the other options. I started out by "visited" my daughter's home town library (compete with picture), checking out the traffic and sights along the way and ended by dragging my destination to her house.

Just for giggles I turned the URL into a Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/Karen

Tiny URL and You Send It - Things 13 & 14

Tiny URL are small wonders. I love this! I can't say the number of times I have given a patron the URL for an atricle I have found for a research paper and thought about the chances of them going home and pulling it up again. This would be a great way to make it so much easier them! I an anxious to get a phone request for infromation from Novel List, so I can created a Tiny URL and send it to them. I love this one.

You Send It. I will past this information to some of my family and patrons that need it so they can use it to expand the size of the attachments they send. Pictures are the way of the world and this will help them send larger files. As they say, "Bigger is Better."

Barbara, Janet, and Facebook - Thing 12

Facebook. Everybody is talking about it, participating in it and have fun with it. I think that having a library a Facebook wall page would be a great place to communicate with all kinds of library acitivies!

I decided to create an alter ego for my Facebook entry and opted to use the name of my character in my senior play. Now this is not the first time I have used this name as I have a great fondness for Janet. My Janet didn't have a last name so I decided on Brown. You can find her as janet_brown6810@yahoo.com. I am younger and live in Duncanville, but for Facebook purposes I am happy to be her and live there.

I enjoyed this experience and had fun with it and maybe one day soon I will join as me, but for now this was good for me.

Linked In - Thing 11

Looking at this professional web site certainly gives me a better perspective of some of the other social web sites at which we have been looking. On a professional level, the primary focus of Linked In is tied to recruiting and professional networking with others. But, it also serves as a social connection for people in a common profession to see what others are reading. You can sign up to become a member of a wide variety of Groups. Imagine my surprise when upon completing my registration and being directed to the home page I saw my City of Frisco colleagues that had already sign up; I discovered I could correspond with them in a whole different way.

It was neat to see what others in the "Government Administration" industry are reading. Some members of this group correspond in a different language, like Arjen Doosje who is currently reading L'ipnotista.

Linked In has a verification process that helps ensure only "real" people are allowed to join in; this helps this site to be more closely monitored than most. The "Jobs" tab was interesting and opens another option to offer to our patron seeking jobs, especially in a professional area.

From job seeking and networking to finding out what others in your interest areas are reading, this site might interest some of our patrons especially those who read a lot or are looking for a new job or helping build their businesses.

LibraryThing - Thing 10

LibraryThing was fun! I had plans to get in there, sign up, look around, and post ~ that's it - Done! But, how could anyone not want to stay and play. It is a great social networking site, something for every book lover. You can interact with readers of like taste or you can build, organize, and catalog your own little ole library. I really enjoyed the"Hot Review" ~ it was really fun to ready - an "Oh, Yeah, I read time time". The Topics and On This Day were great. I can see how this would really work for Book Clubs!

I played with a few of my autographed books from my days as a Children's Librarian and had a ball!

Delicious - /Thing 9

Delicious: Yum Yum!

Delicious is a wonderful convenience. Having all your bookmarks in one place and able to access them from any computer is the primary reason I would recommend Delicious to busy people that need to organize web sites~ at home, work or play. Strong relative tags are the key to organization and you should put thought into the ones you choose for each of your bookmarked sites. At this time I am not sharing my Delicious bookmarks with others, but I can see how that practice could benefit coworkers, family or community people with whom you were doing a project.

This set of bookmarks groups the Mayan Ruins we have visited on cruises we have taken.
